Turn the TV off and just be!

There's one thing I don't have. That's a tv in my living room. I know that some people aren't able to put their tv anywhere else BUT their living room (that's how it was growing up) but, now that we have a basement family room, I decided NO tv in the living room.
You'd be surprised how many times I've had people come over and comment on this apparant phenomenon. They always look around quizzically and say "You don't have a TELEVISION?" in a voice that implies that I don't have a clue as well. I always say "Yes, I do have a television, one downstairs in our family room, and one in our bedroom. Just two. The kids used to have one, but someone of the pint sized nature, shoved a bunch of crap in the VCR part, and ruined it. That actually turned into a blessing in disguise. The kids were watching WAY too much tv.
That doesn't mean my living room is like your Grammy's. Oh no my friends. You will not find squeaky platic coverings on my couch. I have a nice comfy, albeit stained couched. I have a wobbly coffee table that is pushed to the side and used mainly as a seat. A curio cabinet filled with things that I have mananged not to break in all our moving, and things that Aislinn has made for me at school. Those are my true prized posessions, yes, even that paper plate face she drew the first week of first grade. We also have an old buffet that is the biggest catch all in history. The best thing in our living room is our 75 gallon tank that holds a measly 13 goldfish, but we love them. Last but not least, we have toys.
I like that we have a place to be quiet in. A place to get away from tv, and radio and internet. I like having a nice place to nap, or a place to do homework, or a place to read books, or talk or play or snuggle or watch fish. If there is a tv in that room, it would always be on. People are just compelled to have the TV on, no matter how much you don't want it on, it never occurs to people to just turn it off already.
Don't get me wrong. I love Tv. I'm not one of those people who won't even sully her hands with a remote. Oh hell no. It's fall now and I have shows almsot everyday of the week to watch. I love crappy reality shows, and I look forward to sweeps months. Yet, if I miss a show, I am far from devestated.
I love nothing more to sit in our living room and watching my kids play, or after they go to bed, sitting in there in the quiet, with my coffee, watching the fish swim and hear the bubbling of their tank. It's so soothing.
