Power up!
December 7th 2006 04:20
Ah! We've got power once again. It went on this afternoon around 3-ish. It feels good to be home. I am currently walking around in my undies. Life is sweet.
The thing I missed the most about not being home due to lack of power? No, not my bed, or being able to walk around naked. Not my special coffee mug, or the secret chemical make up of my coffee pot that makes my coffee taste JUST right. Not my deck or having all my stuff within reach. Not my fish, or my coffee pajama pants. Not having access to a computer any time I wanted. The thing I missed the MOST in the WHOLE world. My DVR.
Seriously, I just couldn't function. I know, some people think "What the hell do you need a DVR for? Your a stay at home mom. You should have all the time in the WORLD to watch TV." But, that's the POINT! I have KIDS, and kids need THINGS and FOOD and BUTTS TO BE WIPED. I missed having a pause button, or a rewind button, or a "Record it for when the little assholes are in bed" button.
I tried to watch Heros on Monday. This is my favorite show in the whole world. My dad wouldn't stop talking. He was trying to tell me a story, and he wouldn't just shut his pie hole, even though we WENT DOWN THERE TO WATCH THE SHOW!. Since he's my dad, I couldn't say "Dude, seriously, shut your pie hole" Even when he noticed me trying to watch the show and said "Oh I'm sorry, you're watching that aren't you" being the good daughter I am said "Oh it's ok. I'll catch it again later". Finally he left, and then the kids started in. When I told them I would get them their whatever during a commercial, that looked at my confused. They'd have to *gasp* wait? What is a commercial? Why isn't mommy getting up RIGHT NOW to get my water?
At three everyday I either record or turn on Dr. Phil at three. I have to get Aislinn soon after. So, I watch it when I get back. I couldn't do that. I was a distraught mess. How could I get my "down home common sense, tell it like it is" advice? Oh the humanity.
All in all though we had a really good time. No one fought, or sniped. My sister did get a bit aggravated when Aislinn dumped over some coffee on her white slip cover. You can tell my sister doesn't have kids. She has white slipcovers, a teeny trashcan, these really cool, but totally impractical with kids in the house, place mats. Sorry Michelle I could NOT get the mashed ravioli out of one of your placemats. Even her hand drying towel in the bathroom is bright white. Well, was white. My kids dun kilt it. She had decorative nick nacks everywhere for Christmas. Today I caught Jonny redistributing some fancy candles she had and later caught him waving her silver snuffer around yelling "Mark set GO!! RUN doggies!"
Both she and her Dh took everything in stride, and never once made us feel uncomfortable or like we were imposing on them. They are young married couple, and they opened their home to us without thinking twice. At one point we had like nine people and three dogs there. They even gave up their bed the first night. It was like a big sleepover. It was actually really fun, and I was a little sad to see it end.
