I want my, I want my, I want my Mtv

January 30th 2007 17:54
The other day, we attended a birthday party for our niece, who turned sixteen. Usually, at times like this is when the adults like to get together and wax poetic about the "good ole days". I don't know if it's seeing the youthful carefree ways of the kids or what. Since turning 30, I've noticed that I am doing this much more. The world is such a different place since I was a kid. I'm sure everyone feels this way, but damn, we can't let our kids walk the streets anymore in this day and age. To send them to school is scary in itself. Kids aren't held accountable for their actions. Someone told a story about the principle calling a parent, and saying "I watched XXX walk out the door, down the steps and she just left school property" When I was in school, you couldn't leave school, without Shirley the security guard hasseling you. She didn't care if you were giving birth, you better have a note saying you had permission, or your mom better be picking your ass up. If you wanted to leave, you had the bribe the security guard in the BACK of the school. You had to promise to bring him a Jumbo Jack later in the day. If the principle SAW you leaving, he would get up, get out of his office, and chase your ass down. But, becuase of the litigous nature of our society, this is against the rules, becuase heaven forbid the child HAD permission, and you chased after her, and she mistook your CARING for sexual harrasment, then you got her mama all up in your grill yelling at you about scaring her baby.

Since the schools hands are tied, they make big issues about little things. Like a five yr old pinching another five yr old on the butt and being suspended for two months for sexual harrassment. Or someone brought a tiny plastic gun to school from his GI toy. On the flip of THIS, when we were in school, people were more lenient on shit, that you know, DIDN'T fucking matter!

Anyway, I am going somewhere with this. The other night I was perusing Youtube, the bestest fucking internets invention like ever, and I found a video for "Crazy" by Gnarlz Barkly. I got to thinking... "Wow, I haven't seen a video, an actual music video in probably a year, maybe even pushing two" Mtv and VH1? They don't show videos, a staple in my tv diet as a teen. They do SHOWS now. Videos? What's that. Come on, how many Real World/Road Rules challenges do we need to watch? Now, even that show isn't about the challenges as much as it is about the sex and the debauchery, the dialogue so riddled with bleeps, the dog next door is have a seizure.

So, feeling a bit of nostalgia creeping in my soul, I watched the video. This video was so beautiful, that I had to play it again for Tony, and probably watched it four more times that night. All I have to say is, I miss music videos. GOOD music videos. Fuck, Good music!! I am far from a music snob, I probably love Fergie way more than a woman my age should, but I admit, I'm tired of hearing whiny, skinny men singing in fake british accents, I'm tired of hearing about the bling, and the cars. I'm tired of Beyonce, I'm tired of Akon. Where is THIS generations Janice Joplin? Their Nirvana? Their Metalica? Their Whitney?

And WHERE ARE THE FUCKING VIDEOS??

So, my new thing when go poop is to watch videos. So far two have stuck out as goodies. Gnarlz Barkly with Crazy and Fergie's Fergelicious. (I told you, I like her too much)

Crazy is just visually beautiful, and unlike anything I've ever seen. It's soothing, and brings the song in a complete circle, a perfect compliment to the lyrics without being too literal.

And Fergie of course. How can you NOT dance to this song, and then, and then, the video is just so freaking awesome!! (I am going to MAKE YOU WATCH THIS VIDEO TERI!! )

Enjoy!

Great post.
I'm in the same boat as you, 'cept the ride is a little more turbulent than yours .../
I'm a DJ.
I'm 38 going on 23 (as far as my maturity is concerned).
Yeah, the kids ain't nuthin' like when we was at school. Behaviour and attitude has changed tenfold.
"Raunch culture" has a lot to answer for.
Music clips have been the same for years now, you ain't missin' much ...
The melding of hiphop/r&b visuals with rock'n'roll attitude has seen a glut of sex-soaked flashy grunge aesthetics ... And it's all bullshit!
Yeah, the Crazy clip is superb ... funny, I saw that the first time myself only yesterday .... at the gym. The gym for Chrissake?! If my teenaged self could see me now, he'd have a fit (of laughter)!
I DJ a lot of 80s tracks at one of my bar residencies ... Tunes I grew up with (I was a shameless new romantic for awhile) ... and so many of them sound so much more remarkable than the crap that comes out now ... Is it just me or are there so many more manufactured pop singers and groups now than when we were at school ..??!
I remember fondly - and yes, youtube is sensational for finding these again!!! - sexy-arty clips for songs like Ultravox's Vienna or Duran Duran's The Chauffeur ... But done with style and panache, not these bimbo-dance pieces of utter bullocks like Eric Prydz Call On me clip or any lame r&b clip which is trying to push the boundary on what they show sexually ... Don't get me wrong though, I'm no prude ... but the mystique and the subtle artistry seems to be missing from so much of contemporary pop's music clips ....
So, in a word "yes" I agree with you!

I agree...kids need to be held acountable for their actions to help them become better adults. I think your wording " Where is THIS generations Janice Joplin? Their Nirvana?..." sound a little Mat Dillon from singles, but it is harder to find music that is worth listening to enough to buy a CD...Yes, I still pay for music...

If you watch MTV or VH1 early in the morning or late at night there are still small blocks of videos that play but nothing that would satisfy the MTV generation that started watching in the 80s.

Luckily we can find music videos online that might satify enough for a bit...

Sandi, this has been said by other people on the net, but don't you think that Fergilicious sounds like a cheap imitation of Supersonic?

You know Cibbuano... I read that somewhere today, and I never made the connection. Yet, now that it's been pointed out, I can see it's true. I still like it though.

Is this because I didn't respond to your comment Lily? Let me start off by saying I am sorry you're offended, then let me explain how I roll.

I don't comment to every single persons comments. I just feel giving some fakey response to every commenter is...... I don't know the word I am looking for, well I guess I gave it, fake.

This is also my philosophy on my parenting boards, if I honestly don't care about the post, I don't answer. Sure, there is something about being NICE but from my personal point of view, those few one or two bland answers just to acknowledge the person are condescending, at least that's how I feel when someone does that to me. I'd rather they not answer at all them give me that pity fuck kwim?

So, yes Lily, Crazy is an emotional video, and I am sorry that it makes you cry.

Bryn....

There ARE to many manufactured Pop tarts. It true when they say Video Killed the RAdio Star, the Buggles, they knew their shit!! Take Gnarlz Barkly. The lead singer is not attractive at all. So they have to resort to cartoony videos (not all of them are as good as Crazy trust me) which to me detracts from their music a bit. Although it doesn't seem to hurt the Gorillaz much at all.

It used to be about the voice. Janice Joplin was one ugly hoor but, man she had charisma and could sing. Do you think Mama Cass or hell Arethra Franklin could make it in this day and age? Unfortunately not I don't think.

No, I won't if you're this melodramatic over the internets. Sheesh.

Yes, I quite like the videoclipfor Crazy. Every now and then I get to watch these on weekend mornings and yes, haven't times changed. But it is nice to see stuff like this and the first Franz Ferdinand clip etc come out in more of the original, artistic style.

You've gotta watch VH1 Classic. It's awesome.
