I met a girl - Pt 1

The weekend had started three weeks ago, the next race in Tamworth meant at least an overnight stop given the distance and with practice on offer the day before the opportunity for a long weekend was too good to miss.
A friend I had been chatting to lived up in the general area and with a little side trip after the event, not only was i heading home but I could justify an overnight stop
The car had been playing up a little in the fortnight beforehand but it seemed up to the drive up and back, I arranged accomodation in Tamworth and my friend offered to organise the Sunday night. After an event I am normally stuffed both physically and mentally and she offered to be in charge of everything - all I had to do was arrive.
The drive up on Saturday morning started off okay but as I got closer to Tamworth the car appeared to get tighter, not accelerating quite as crisply as expected. It was very subtle but when you know an engine intimately you notice these things.
By the time I got to Tamworth I knew there was a problem, it wasn't going to race too well but I was fairly confident it would still get me home. I decided to skip practice knowing I couldn't push it, Sunday would still be fun.
Saturday night I got dressed up in search of a laugh, I spent a few hours wondering where all the people had gone afteral this is Tamworth - country music mecca. Not my style but surely they party a little !
The first bar had great food and a big screen with Manly playing there last season game, the bar however was empty.
The second bar had great beer, a very young barchick and again only diners in the eating area. A chef was slowly pickling himself stupid after a week in the kitchens and we had a fair chat before he appeared to lose conciousness and get taken home.
I finally found a pub that had a drum kit set up in the corner, filled with drunk hairy ferals but nonetheless looked interesting.
I spent an hour or so texting and drinking and as the night headed towards 10pm I found the environment had been beautified somewhat with a substantial female presence... things were looking up !
As a Sydney boy I'd been careful not to over dress but even so I stood out a bit and a few younger guys asked me if I knew the band or was here for another reason. This was pretty cool for a stranger in town but then I also got a few less friendly guys suggesting I might like to go outside if I didn't like what they said, the difficulty was I didn't hear them as my mind was on other things LOL
There were a fair number of girl couples which wasn't a shock to me but I think it made a few natives restless, an older canadian guy grabbed a stool at my table hoping to be rescued from the weirdness of an aussie bar. He had appararently only just landed on a 3mth adventure after his wife left him, I tried my best to get him attached to something with a heart beat.
And then the band played. They were kids, teenagers proabably and they did a good job in the first set. Nothing overly fancy but still controlled and deceptively skilled. The crowd could have been listening to a one arm bandit playing and still danced on but for those of us still clear headed it was good enough.
My Canadian friend and I had a tall table fronting the stage with the floor in front of us, I only had 3 drinks spilt down my leg which was pretty good considering the state of the patrons. The lead singer had deep dark eyes, a fairly skinny tall body and long strong fingers, I felt compelled to have words with her when they took a break....
