Design on a dollar.

April 16th 2007 01:48
Ok first of all..... hey why does Orble switch crap around ALL the time. I have the hardest time making a post, trying to find WHERE it is I'm supposed to click. Remember, Orble, I am NOT as smart as a fifth grader, so I need it to be some what easy.

I have become obsessed with redecorating. There is just a tiny glitch in that.... money. It's not that I want anything fancy. Just you know I want it to be good quality, look nice and be like free when it comes to price. Sheesh even bedding is so expensive. Everything I like is expensive. I am not one of those people that can throw shit together and make it look nice. I'm just not. I am the reason stores set up displays, I go Oh that looks fabulous, give me all of that.

Right now, it's my bedroom. The carpet of clothing and the broken down dressers aren't cutting it for me. Neither is the kitchen table in there that was SUPPOSED to be a desk that just get's shit thrown on top of it contantly. But, I have no incentive to clean it, becuase when I do, it's so boring and dull that at least the clothing gives it an air of personality. At this point the personality of Booger from the Revenge of the Nerds is better than none at all. We have a cheap twenty dollar print from Wal Mart that we bought in our EXTREME poor days hanging over our bed. (by bed, I mean a mattress and box spring on a frame) It was such a SPLURGE. I remember getting it and hanging it with such pride over our stained couch in Virginia. Now, I see it for what it really is... a cheap, ugly print.

The bedroom is very important to me. I see it as my sanctuary away from the hustle of life. Where my huband and I have hot animal relations, and where I get sleep, finally sleep after a hard day.

To invest in curtains, a new bedding set, a BED, and all the little hangy things for the wall is so daunting. I want something that is ME, I don't want to settle for just anything as I've always done in the past. Buying duvet covers off the clearance racks at Target, and once even the Goodwill. I want to make my bedroom my OWN. I want something cool and comforting and sexy and ME.

This has made me very sad. To try and make myself feel better I bought some new kitchen things.... from the dollar store. I excitedly got home, and put on my new table cloth and place mats, and realized.... I settled once again. The tablecloth is horrid. You can SEE the wood through it. The place mats are still kind of nice.

I think that this is perfect example of how I do things. Always settling for what is the cheapest. Why I can't see that a nice bedding set for $200 is going to be SOO worth it? Why do I feel I am only worth $20 clearance rack items, and dollar store tablecloths? All of a sudden my need for a change has manifested itself into this whole "Why I don't love myself" kind of thing. Sure, it COULD be that, or it could be what it looks like, I don't have the monetary means to decorate the way I want to. It sucks. I keep telling myself that later, later on I'll have everything the way I want. Yet, even that reassurance is starting to fall upon my own deaf ears.

Oh, don't even get me started on bedrooms as sanctuaries and sleeping arrangements! This house was purchased as an intentional fixer upper and in the few years I've lived here, it's gone from bad to worse... including the master bedroom being destroyed beyond the point of use... which is why I'm now a sofa sleeper.

Ugh....

My problem now is that I"ve just completely lost motivation. I'm in the "what's the frigging point" phase with my house. I can whip things together and turn bed sheets into lacy drapes, or convert some cinnamon sticks into darling curtain rods on a whim... but what's the frigging point??? *grins*

I think before I can focus on bringing in anything new? I need to focus on chucking out the old... and those who know me know exactly what I mean by that.

I wish you all the best in your redecorating efforts. All women deserve to have a sanctuary... and in my opinion? It should come with a jet tub in a private bathroom and a do not disturb sign!!

Okay...at the risk at sounding like a total dick...(DickDevi?)....the most luxurious, opulent, comforting sanctuary one can have...is in their mind.

Having said that piece of schmaltz...ones boudoir needs to reflect ones self worth.

Having said that crappier piece of schmaltz (what is schmaltz??...isn't it the Jewsish term for chicken fat??)

What your self worth is worth is not based on a dollar sign...look at Britney Spears and ilk.... and besides, if you don't feel good about and inside and with yourself...wearing Versace isn't going to change your perception much....just your reflection.

Sure the wall hanging may be a "cheap ugly print" but it made you happy once, didn't it?

If it doesn't anymore...let it go.

Fuck I'm full of it today.

Anyway...we should all go around like a L'Oreal commercial.....we are so worth it.

At least you're not going the other way...overspending...overcomp ensating....I've seen people do that. Makes me laugh at first and then...I feel a bit sad for them....

later on I'll have everything the way I want....even that reassurance is starting to fall upon my own deaf ears.

Nah. You've just got (f)ear plugs on.

I know the feeling of wanting to update your look but not having the money to do it just the way you want. I'm also a see it on display and buy it kind of girl.

One word... IKEA
Do you have one where you are or where you are moving? I love the stuff there. I love that I can get a nice rich looking duvet and sheet set for a lot less and not feel like I'm settling for something.

In the meantime you can always splurge on the details. I've found that nice sheets make all the difference to me so I buy them from domestications.com or you could look at overstock.com and I don't spend a bundle but I can tell the difference from the ones I bought at Target.
And for artwork get out there with your camera - I've seen what you can do with it. Take a pic you like and get a poster or even a canvas.

Sorry if this is just a bunch of assvice - I just know the feeling all too well.

Wendi... I know how you feel. Since we've never owned a house, a lot of times I get the "What's the point" feeling too becuase it's not OUR house. We can't paint and all that, so I do get discouraged.

Devi... I hear ya. I know that if I just felt better about myself and all that, I wouldn't need "things" to make me feel better. But, its just that "things" can be so pretty sometimes you know??

C.... I looked up Ikea and we dont have one around us. Poo. They dont offer a lot online either.
