Furious Bits - May 2008

Simpson's Law

May 30th 2008 04:45
Location – A local church confessional

The proponents – The local priest and a Sinner

Sinner – Bless me father for I have sinned

Priest – God is all understanding and all forgiving, he will forgive anyone anything they truly wish to be forgiven for. Please tell God your sins.

Sinner – Well my team of photographers were given an assignment to photograph the dark side of youth, we were told to create a collection that best exhibited the trials and troubles of kids as they struggled to span the bridge across the valley of adolesence.

Priest – A challenge for all young people, some more so than others. What were your first thoughts of how to go about this ?

Sinner - The old story of Billy goat gruff sprang to mind with childhood on one bank, adulthood on the other and maybe a troll underneath, the troll could represent many of the modern dangers such as drugs, alcohol or sex. The difficulty was finding something real we could capture with the camera. Then by luck, we came across someone offering us what appeared to be exactly what we were looking for, they had experience in our artistic community and pretty much understood our brief as we explained it.

Priest – A lucky break perhaps, but then often things are made available to those that deserve them.

Sinner – This guy took us to his prepared location and it was amazing, firstly the entrance was actually inside a conventional house, almost spy like with a secret passage and special locks. We climbed down into a deep and dark hallway, it was pitch black but one could imagine cold stone walls wet with seepage from above.

Priest – Hmmmn sounds very elaborate

Sinner – It was very professional, it could easily be used for a set on a porn flick or something, in fact we did suggest that but the guy looked a little offended. Anyway once through a real heavy looking cell door we found the model in makeup and costume, her skin looked virginal white and was dressed in doll like clothes. As with most top models these days she was very scrawny, not strictly under fed but certainly not plump. She would look great on film.

Priest – I don’t mean to rush you but there are other people waiting, I know the detail has a bearing but can we perhaps move along a little to the sinning bit.

Sinner – Sorry father I will try. The model didn’t say a word whilst we were there, she played the part of a lonely misunderstood girl struggling to leave her dolls behind and yet wanting to be, to feel, to experience life as a young adult. She knew how to pout for the camera and put out a confident sexy almost addictive persona, the sort you see splashed throughout the pages of the hip gossip mags like girlfriend or even Cosmo.
It was a little scary to be honest, this 12 year old girl dressed to kill in a hot white mini offering things she hadn’t experienced yet in a more convincing way than many twenty year olds would.

Priest – So did this have more than a passing impact on you ?

Sinner – Well you could say that, I guess that’s always an indication for me of success, if I feel a response or physical reaction to something then I know others will feel the same

Priest – So are you saying you acted on this with the girl, or perhaps used this image later with someone else, you know the two aren’t such different.

Sinner – Gosh no way, sorry I must have given you the wrong impression. No I was horrified, repulsed by the girl, deep inside her eyes you could see this poor naďve and impressionable girl and that wasn’t pretend, that was the model in real life.

Priest – Okay that’s good so what did you do next

Sinner – Well we did the shoot, she was very professional and open to all the ideas that we had and the guy suggested. We got some cutting edge stuff showing her simple pale young skin against the coarse hard stone walls, there were some old chains in the background for effect but it wasn’t appropriate to actually use them. She willingly stripped off completely at one point after the guy suggested a particular pose might work better that way.

Priest – Well art is very much an individual thing. With her being so young she did have her parents permission ?

Sinner – That’s the funny thing it turned out this guy was actually her father, we met her mother upstairs and she was fine about it as long as she could approve any photos which is quite normal.

Priest – So after the shoot, did you have any further contact?

Sinner – No none, we left the girl in the downstairs studio to get dressed and after a brief discussion about what would happen next we left feeling well... quite content with the end results.

Priest – So do you feel remorse or guilt for taking the photos of the underage girl, I mean even though she gave consent and her parents agreed, you still took naked photographs of a 12 year old girl.

Sinner – Oh no that was just art, that’s absolutely fine I mean it wasn’t a 12 year old girl we were photographing but a representation of the trials she faced.

Priest – One of those trials being adults superimposing their sexualised view of the world on a young girl ?

Sinner – Well I hadn’t thought about it that way

Priest – You said your brief was to capture the dark side of youth, you also indicated a sexual undertone and even nudity in your photographs. One of the fine lines adults tread is that between mentor and idol.

Sinner – So what you are saying is the act of taking and the photographs themselves are one of the trials this girl as a model was faced with. It wasn’t necessarily anything to do with her youth that created the trial, rather us as adults that sought to find something that maybe didn’t exist created it.

Priest – Exactly. Now back to the subject in hand, you came here to confess a sin ?

Sinner – The guy was very well respected in the community, held a high paying job with lots of responsibility and had even considered running for political office. His wife was apparently very active in the local church community so the family itself had a huge amount of respect and position.

Priest – Yes …

Sinner – They have both been charged with incestuous relations and imprisonment of a minor.

Priest – Okay I think I am starting to see your problem.

The Great Divide

How long will it be before big business sponsors 'professional' criminals as a justifiable business activity and will it then become tax deductable ?

It might seem a little far fetched at first but are we really that far away from the comercial next step. Ask yourself this, if you were offered $3m to perpetrate a crime that would result in a minimum of 5 years jail would you do it ?

Exclude the moral and obscene crimes to make it easy, choose something that was serious enough to attract worldwide media attention, book rights and the usual pay televison mini series. Enough fodder for any sponsor to get a return form the deal even with paying out $3m up front !

If you don't believe the money is there now you are kidding yourself, $3m from a pay tv channel to get the material and long term dividends is chicken feed these days. The prolification of cheap reality TV shows such as Big Brother, Dancing & Singing competitions and even cooking shows is proof that movies cost too much.

The only thing that is stopping them is the lack of an offer, the legal aspects of profiting from the crime could easily be covered by a half straight lawyer. The moral choice is already resolved by the audience, the human race has an endless fascination with dark and dastardly stuff.

As for the perpetrators I guess yuou don't need much evidence that people will do anything for a few dollars let alone a life changing sum.

So how many years before we see it happen or are you still living in the 1950s where people respected moral boundaries and didn't smoke pot ?
