Furious Bits - December 2007

23/12/07
Just a little confused about a couple of media reports of late....

Australian Troops to return home
I read that 550 troops will return home after their current rotation, this was described as a Christmas present to the troops in Iraq. However there are a couple of issues I have, the word rotation suggests troops are rotated, assumming we aren't talking about turning the guys round on the spot wouldn't they be coming home anyway ?

A Christmas Present is something you give or recieve, but these troops that are stationing in Iraq aren't being given anything, its the ones that are at home the would have gone out that have been given something.

And then the figures, 550 troops are not being redeployed but at least a 1000 are remaining there, if the total contingent is 1550 even a 5th grader could calculate that only 1/3rd of the troops are being withdrawn.

And then (yes I hate to use the same words to start a sentance but I think it might be justified) we realise that our troops in Afganistan will remain long term, ummm the 550 that were to be rotated to Iraq will no doubt be on the list to go there instead ! Wow that is a real Christmas present when you consider the duties these guys have been tasked with in each country.

Japan ceases hunting Humpback whales
Something felt so good inside, for about 30 seconds a feeling of great elation thought about sneaking out of my pores and tickling the hairs on my arms. But then I realised it was all another hidden furfy, its just the humpbacks not the minkis or the other stuff they poach under a licence of science.

The skeptic in me wants to believe they made the decision out of humanity but I fear it was more likely there was a technical issue that prevented them from doing it and this story was the result of some swift PR spin.

Damn I thought the free press was smart and informative maybe I should believe all I read.

Are their really two ways ?

December 18th 2007 11:07
Seriously dad are their really two ways to run a school system ?

Interesting question from a child but its true, during the recent election it dawned on our family, (thanks kids) that we must be particularly silly people. There are a few really important structural things in society and a large number of smaller frilly bits.

The structural things like education, healthcare, roads, law and order. These are the perenial topics that our politicians tell us all about in 30 sec tv commercials and full page newspaper ads during a 6 week election campaign. We then, the educated public, make a decision about who we think should have a go at during what they think is best and then sit back and watch for the next 3 years.

But really is there more than one way to fix a problem? my dad always said there were 2 ways to do anything, the right way and the wrong way. In the little issues like protecting the last remaining 300 tree moths from the last gum tree on the left there may well be a number of ways to achieve an end result, but in a hospital surely you have enough doctors and nurses, with beds and medicines for patients and an orderly queue and bob's your uncle it works. What other way is there ?

With education you teach kids with teachers in class rooms and modern technology as it becomes viable. What other way is there ?

Police chase criminals and the guilty get punished, how much grey is there there ?

Okay so it does get complicated allocating money and making sure it is spread properly but who decides where it goes in the end, the politicians or the public service that process the requests. Of course the politician is in charge but the reality as yes minister clearly taught us was the unelected members of the public service have a greater say in the scheme of things. Not to say that is a bad thing as a process is a process.

If this election process is so successful why don't big companies do it, have elections every 3 years for the whole board. Take a look at one of the largest multi national corporations and ask the question do they have a compulsory referendum on two points of view every 3 years with the posibility of a complete change of board. Of course not, such instability would ruin the company in the market place.

So why is it such a good idea for a whole country ?

Everyone encounters times when a loved one, friend or relative desperately wants to solve your dilema, they would bend over backwards, make the world turn the opposite way just to be able to help you in an hour of need.

You can't thank these people enough for their generosity, their unilateral display of unconditional love is heart warming. Its so wonderfully reassuring to know that society still has these soft moments to surprise us, a happy moment indeed.

However how often have these very people been the source of the problem, no matter how hard they try, no matter how much they want to make your troubles disappear, it simply is an impossible task because they are the problem themselves and they cant see it.

An example might be easier, I am not sorry to bring sex into this as it is a favourite subject and one that raises many of these situations !

Simon is a happily married handsome young man with a small family, he has aspirations at work, he leads a healthy social life and his wife is wonderful. She is beautiful, caring a great mother and loves him dearly.

When they first met they hard an active sex life, they were naughty in places their parents might not have thought of. They weren't outragious as some but still they felt they tried most things. Romance occured occassionally but not as a given, he was too young when they met to fully understand how and by the time he'd worked it out she was too old to be bothered with such trivia.

Having collected a few tools in the romance department, confidence in his ability and his own looks he now found himself without a patient to explore this wild new and exciting world. No matter how hard he tried to ellicit some form of romantic response from his wife, she just didn't connect. She tried hard to maintain a regular sex life but it wasn't the same as making love.

He wanted to seduce a willing participant, make her senses sing and her body dance, he just wanted to make love with someone else.

So in a situation like this the wife is incapible of solving the problem, she can not be another person for Simon to seduce !
